Gumboot Dancing - Learning some steps

Expressing Culture through the Arts

In groups of 4-5, Room 10 are exploring various art forms that come from different cultural groups around the world. These include:

  • South African Gumboot Dance
  • Ojo De Dios  - weaving from Mexico and Bolivia
  • Māori koru designs
  • Pacific Island Tapa Cloths
  • Beijing Opera Masks
  • The origins of drumming
Each group will experience two forms of art and become experts to educate others, building the learning in Room 10

Room 10 as journalists

Starting this week, Room 10 students will be responsible for reporting on weekly learning and events. They will be working in teams of 3 and taking on the role of journalists. Watch this space for updates!
A special thanks to Corey for helping set up the reporting accounts for the students.

Flippa Ball for PE

Miss Oborn is making the most of the wonderful weather and keeping our water sports theme going each Thursday. Room 10 built on teamwork and ball skills with a fun and very active game of flippaball last week.

Cultural Expression

Food and Culture

Wow! Room 10 has been highly motivated by our unit around culture, beliefs and values. For home learning, the students were asked to into a particular cultural group and identify a way their culture is expressed through the arts. Students have taken their own spin on this and opened it wider regarding expression. Gabby and Corey amazed us as they brought in food that is special to their own heritage. Corey shared Scottish fudge and Gabby brought in English pikelets! (Mrs Knight wished she worked on Fridays in Room 10!)

What else will come in this week??

Food For Thought

As part of our food for thought programme, Room 10 headed to Pak n Save to look carefully at nutrition labels and categorise foods under 'occasional' foods and 'everyday foods'. The students were very respectful and very focused on their task. Thank you to all the parents who helped out on the day. Thank you also to Katrina, Gabby's mum, a dietician who came in the following week to answer our nutrition-based questions.
